How to Register a Domain Name: Step-by-Step Guide
A domain name is your address on the internet, and registering one is usually the very first step of putting a business or project online. Here’s the process end to end.
1. Choose a name
Keep it short, easy to spell over the phone, and free of hyphens or numbers where possible. If your ideal .com is taken, consider a close alternative or a relevant alternate ending (.io, .co, .store) rather than an awkward variation of the same name.
2. Check availability
Use a domain search tool (like the one on our Domains page) to check whether your chosen name is available across common extensions. Availability is checked in real time against the domain registry.
3. Pick the right extension (TLD)
.com remains the most recognized default worldwide. A country-code option like .com.bd makes sense if you’re specifically targeting Bangladeshi customers and want that local signal. Extensions like .store or .shop can suit a niche ecommerce brand.
4. Complete registration
During checkout you’ll provide contact details (used for the WHOIS record — see our separate guide on WHOIS privacy), choose a registration length (1-10 years; longer terms are sometimes slightly discounted), and pay. Domain privacy protection and auto-renew are usually offered as options at this step — both are worth enabling.
5. After registration
Point the domain’s nameservers at your hosting account (see our nameservers guide) and add the DNS records your site and email need. A newly registered domain can take up to 24-48 hours to become fully visible everywhere due to DNS propagation.
Keep the registration email address current and renew before expiry — an expired domain can be picked up by someone else after its grace period ends.
