Getting Started with Reseller Hosting: WHM Basics
Reseller hosting gives you a slice of server resources plus WHM (Web Host Manager) access, letting you create and manage individual cPanel hosting accounts for your own clients — effectively running your own small hosting business on top of infrastructure someone else maintains.
What you get with reseller hosting
- A WHM login separate from any individual client’s cPanel — this is your “admin” layer for creating and managing every account under your reseller package.
- A pool of resources (disk space, bandwidth, number of accounts) that you allocate across your clients as you see fit.
- The ability to white-label the experience — your clients can see your branding rather than your hosting provider’s.
First things to check in WHM
- Account Information — confirm your allocated disk space, bandwidth, and account limits under WHM’s home/stats area.
- Packages (Packages > Add a Package) — set up at least one resource package template before creating your first client account, so every new account gets consistent, sensible limits.
- Nameservers — confirm what nameservers your clients should point their domains to (often your reseller account’s own branded nameservers, if configured).
- Branding (cPanel > Branding, if available on your plan) — set your logo and company name so client-facing cPanel/WHM screens show your business, not your upstream provider’s.
Creating your first account
Under Account Functions > Create a New Account, enter the client’s domain, choose a package, and WHM provisions a full, isolated cPanel account for them — they get their own cPanel login, completely separate from your WHM access and from every other client’s account.
A mindset shift worth naming
As a reseller, you are effectively your clients’ hosting provider — they’ll come to you, not your upstream provider, when something goes wrong. Understanding WHM’s account management, package, and suspension tools well enough to support that role is the real skill reseller hosting requires, more than any single technical setting.
