Getting Started with cPanel: A Complete Beginner’s Tour

cPanel is the control panel most shared and reseller hosting accounts use to manage a website without needing server-admin experience. When you log in for the first time, the number of icons can feel overwhelming — this tour covers the sections you’ll actually use.

Logging in

You can reach cPanel at yourdomain.com/cpanel or yourdomain.com:2083, or through the link in your welcome email. Use the username and password sent when your hosting account was created.

The sections that matter

• Files — File Manager, backups, and disk usage. This is where your website’s actual files live.
• Databases — MySQL Databases and phpMyAdmin, for anything running on WordPress or another database-driven app.
• Domains — add-on domains, subdomains, and redirects if you’re hosting more than one site on the account.
• Email — create mailboxes, forwarders, and autoresponders under your domain.
• Security — SSL/TLS status, IP blockers, and password-protected directories.
• Metrics — visitor stats and bandwidth/resource usage, useful for spotting a traffic spike early.

A few things worth doing on day one

Change your cPanel password to something unique, confirm AutoSSL has issued a certificate for your domain (Security > SSL/TLS Status), and set up at least one email account under Email > Email Accounts so you’re not relying on a personal inbox for domain-related mail.
